The Bruichladdich Bandits were beaten in the final of the inaugural Club Cup of the London Beach Rugby tournament at the weekend. Eighty tons of sand were spread across the piazza at the Doom Bar in Covent Garden to see the main prize snatched from the Laddies’ grasp by the excellent “Stash France”. Congratulations to them.
London Beach Rugby is a slightly different form of the game to that seen at the long-established Islay tournament. It is touch rugby rather than the full-contact version acted out in the blood-soaked location of the White Hart Hotel beach in Port Ellen. There are many similarities however, with each team having ten players with five on the pitch at any one time and rolling substitutions.
The London tournament supports the charity Restart Rugby, which provides assistance to professional rugby players whose careers are ended prematurely through injury.
We wish the organisers every success as they take this exciting spectator sport forward.
