The Budgie – 25 years at Bruichladdich

Duncan ‘The Budgie’ McFadyen, Senior Stillman at Bruichladdich, has been now worked at the distillery for an unbroken twenty five years – having continued in a caretaker role during the long period of closure from 1994 through 2001 when it reopened following its acquisition by a private consortium.

The Budgie has cheerfully assumed many roles during his long career, from mashman and stillman and maintenance engineer to tourguide and indeed distillery icon.  It was fitting that an image of The Budgie, taken during a distillation of The Botanist, has been seen around the world as the company launched its new Islay Dry Gin.

Simon Coughlin, one of the founders of the consortium and now CEO, said “This has been an extraordinary journey with many twists and turns and you have been with us all the way. We would like to mark the 25th anniversary of your work here at Bruichladdich with a very special bottle of whisky – which was distilled just three days after you first walked through the gates in October 1989. We really appreciate your skills, dedication, loyalty and hard work. Many, many thanks Budgie – and here’s to the next twenty five years… Cheers!”.
