Nobody in the business generates excitement quite like Jim McEwan. His Masterclass had sold out long ago and the Laddiefans were queuing outside the doors of our huge Warehouse Twelve from eight oclock in the morning. When Adam Hannett led Allan Logan and Jim up onto the stage sometime after ten thirty, the roar from around 500 people comfortably packed along the long tables was probably heard in Port Charlotte.
This is a performer who understands showbiz. A veteran of the limelight at the very top of his game. He is at once funny, engaging, knowledgeable and ascerbic. The performance is fuelled, punctuated, by six of the best drams that are not available anywhere, unless you are lucky enough to be there. More about those later….
Could this really be Jim’s last Feis Ile Masterclass? His impending retirement means that he will no longer have to shoulder the responsibility for the organisation and choreography of these remarkable events, but maybe he will be persuaded to make some sort of an appearance once again, one day? The idea that this extraordinary character is lost to us completely, is very difficult to come to terms with. Slainte!!
