The foundation for our Classic Laddie is not a recipe set in stone, but a distilling philosophy. We have no interest in consistency or uniformity, instead – year by year – the variety and provenance of our barley shapes our spirit, and an ever-increasing range of casks are sourced to evolve the suite of flavours in our warehouse. Each batch of the Classic Laddie will, by nature, be unique and subtly different, but it is ultimately our Head Distiller who curates this assemblage of our finest spirits, to showcase the classic, floral and elegant Bruichladdich house style.

IT’S CALLED SCOTCH FOR A REASON

The suite of casks selected for each batch of The Classic Laddie has been filled with spirit we have distilled from 100% Scottish-grown barley. We could never deny that there is a romantic element in our determination to source our core ingredient from Scotland, after all, there is no requirement to make it so. But this is not simply sentiment, thee unique combination of an ideal climate, high latitude and the soil types found in Scotland makes the Scottish barley crop perfect for creating the optimum flavour profile during distillation.

Tasting Notes

CHARACTER – Smooth as pebbles in a pool. It’s clean, fresh and lively with both the oak and the grain in perfect harmony.

COLOUR – Sunlight on fields of early summer barley.

NOSE – The bouquet is brilliant. Opening with barley sugar and a hint of mint before leading into the most wonderful notes of freshly cut wild flowers; buttercup, daisy, meadowsweet, myrtle, primrose and cherry blossom. The cleanliness of the spirit is remarkable. As the seconds tick by, more aromas rise from the glass, little zephyrs of spindrift and sea pinks reminding you that this spirit is matured exclusively by the sea. After some four or five minutes and with the addition of a little water, caramelised fruits drift onto the scene; lemon drops and honey, tangerine and tablet.

PALATE – The palate entry is so refined and refreshing, the sweet oak and the barley arriving together sending the taste buds into raptures. The fruits from distillation drift in on an atlantic breeze and pop on the tongue like champagne bubbles. A combination of ripe green fruit, brown sugar and sweet malt bring closure. A taste back in time, a realisation that not all single malts are equal and to achieve the absolute optimum, you must use barley that is made in Scotland. Make this one the benchmark for all  others you meet on your journey through the stills of Scotland.

FINISH – Unforgettable! Its best enjoyed in good company, you just don’t want the evening to end. It brings warmth to the heart and soul. The clock slows down and the cares of tomorrow disappear into the dawn.

MOOD – Conviviality! Relaxed, enjoying the spirit in the glass and the laughter from tales often told but never tired of hearing.

BEYOND THE STEREOTYPE – AN UNPEATED ISLAY

The island of Islay is home to many world-famous Scotch whisky distilleries, many of whom produce distinctly smokey spirit. Conversely, our Bruichladdich single malts are always unpeated. There is more to Islay than a flavour profile provided by sourcing peated malt. To us, it is in an exclusively Islay distillation, maturation and bottling.

Fully exposed to the power of Atlantic storms, the salt-soaked air permeates the very fabric of our distillery. A fresh marine salt-citrus tang is the signature accent of The Classic Laddie and those who have been here will understand the profound contribution of our Hebridean island home to the development of this great single malt.

NOTHING ADDED, AND NOTHING TAKEN AWAY

There are two widely accepted industrial practices that undermine the authenticity of Scotch: the addition of caramel colouring or e150a, and chill-filtration (the removal of natural oils). We reject both.

Many producers add caramel colouring to standardise the appearance of their whisky, while also making it appear darker than it really is.

All of our whiskies’ colour comes from the cask. Our coated bottles provoke the question, is older and darker better? Or should we rely on other indicators of quality?

Chill-filtering is a cosmetic process that strips whisky of its natural oils. When bottling at 40%, the oils cause cloudiness, so many distillers remove them to improve aesthetics. We would rather have a haze in our glass and retain flavour and viscosity for a maximum mouthfeel.

STRENGTH & CHARACTER

We bottle our Classic Laddie at 50% alcohol by volume as opposed to the average of 40-46%. The flavour of our spirit at 50%abv is barley forward, meaning you taste more of the Scottish malt we have worked hard to trace. We will not stretch our spirit and compromise on quality for the sake of profit.

AN ASSEMBLAGE HAND-SELECTED BY OUR HEAD DISTILLER

Creating the Classic Laddie is one of the most complex and demanding responsibilities bestowed upon our head distiller Adam Hannett. Each batch must demonstrate the floral and elegant Bruichladdich house style, achieved only by assembling a suite of flavours from a wide array of casks. Each will be subtly different to the last.

Composing each unique recipe is a rigorous process; Adam must carry a multi-dimensional picture of the sensory potential that surrounds him. He must systematically sample and evaluate every spirit by nose, taste and mouthfeel. It is painstaking and difficult work, requiring a clear head and many checks, pauses and re-evaluations over many weeks. The final formula will be decided in the quiet of his sample room.

No Hidden Measures

WE BELIEVE IN SHARING THE PROVENANCE OF OUR WHISKY, BUT ARE LEGALLY RESTRICTED IN WHAT WE CAN SAY. WE THINK THIS IS WRONG.
