Bere - gramineae, hordeum vulgare - is one of the world's oldest cultivated cereals.

It is possible that this is the barley that produced the original “usque-baugh”, the water of life. It is also possible that this grain, and the knowledge of how to distil it, was carried to the Hebrides by Norse invaders in the 9th century from its ancient origins in the "fertile crescent" of Mesopotamia.

Tasting Notes

A unique experience. Refined - with a feline delicacy. The spirit is smooth, streamlined with the warmth of an Indian summer. A pure spiritual pleasure.

Straw yellow.

The bouquet is totally disarming. A dash of water to tease the shy aromatics and a bouquet of water lily, marsh marigold, buttercup, gorse and fern ascends. A revelation. Just how pure young single malt can be. The floral notes are interlaced with sweet malt sprinkled with brown sugar. They in turn are joined by fresh fruit notes of gooseberry, pear, apple and lemon. The malted barley notes are shy taking time to rise in harmony with the vanilla-rich oak.

The texture is so very succulent. Lemon meringue laced with warm honey, then the tidal surge of slow-distilled spirit that floods the palate with wave after wave of delicious soft fruits as one will ever discover in a single malt. You realise you are in the company of something wonderful, something rare. A super sweet butterkist flavour, with just a hint of wild summer flowers. The mid-palate introduces the oak character which gives us glazed hazelnuts.

It’s very impressive for a spirit so young, from a grain so old. There is an air of gentle grace and innocence that evolves from this spirit that I have never before experienced. One is in the presence of a refined, delicate, beautiful whisky, a heroine who will haunt you for a long time. It’s oh so hard to say goodbye. A pinnacle experience.
