Islay - Warmest Place in UK

As many visitors to Islay are surprised to discover, there are palm trees on the island in the north Atlantic.

OK we are not talking of tropical island type palm trees – but they are there all the same. Even olive trees (one, actually) growing outside. Islay has a mild climate, moderated by the Gulf Stream, long summer daylight hours, and amazing clarity and purity of light – and Atlantic breezes.

It means it rarely, if ever, goes below freezing while on the other hand one can be assured of a minimum of a breeze (and a stiff one at that) at all times which tends to keep the temperature down.

So we are rather proud that on Friday 30th March Islay was officially the warmest place in the UK with a temperature of 15°C.
