Tuscania and Otranto - Tragedy at the Lochindaal Distillery

This picture is one of the best we have of the old Loch Indaal Distillery in Port Charlotte.  Unfortunately it was taken in tragic circumstances.

It was 1918, and the USA had entered the Great War.  Thousands of young American soldiers were being transported in troopships to fight in Europe.  Two of the ships were lost off Islay, the Tuscania, torpedoed by U77, and the Otranto, which sank following a collision in a terrible storm.  Hundreds of bodies were recovered and buried in temporary graves.  This picture was taken from one of the windows of the Port Charlotte Hotel and shows one of the funerals as it slowly passed the old whisky distillery.
