Heavily Peated Scotch Whisky: Port Charlotte

The village of Port Charlotte, just two miles along the Islay coastline from Bruichladdich, was once home to a distillery of the same name. In 1829 the Port Charlotte Distillery was commissioned to produce an Islay single malt Scotch whisky, but after a string of closures and takeovers, its doors finally shut for the last time in 1929.

Our Port Charlotte range, in homage to this, features only heavily peated single malts from the Bruichladdich distillery, matured in Port Charlotte village at the site of the old distillery. These were created to represent the style of whisky we believe would have been produced at Port Charlotte during its one hundred year history.

With raw materials from the mainland difficult to come by until the late 19th century, Port Charlotte would have produced a peaty single malt, robust and smoky, containing the characteristics and soul of the craftsmen who produced it.

The Port Charlotte single malt is our tribute to the skills and legacy passed on by these distillery workers. Dating from 1829, the original warehouses from the Port Charlotte distillery are still being used to house our peatiest Scotch whiskies, ensuring that the angels of the village have access to their share, and the whisky of this style has the optimum atmosphere in which to mature.
