The Still House contains two sets of stills - two wash stills and two spirit stills. The first distillation takes place in the wash stills, one of which dates from 1881, making it the oldest in Scotland.

The Harvey brothers designed these unique Bruichladdich stills to be unlike any other that existed on Islay at that time. They are 6m tall, the neck of the spirit still being less than 1m wide. This very tall and narrow-necked still shape produces the most refined, elegant, floral and fruity whisky, for which Bruichladdich would become so well known.
