Bruichladdich's Opening Day 'Better than the Coronation'
Bruichladdich Distillery celebrated its re-opening and inaugural distillation
on 29 May 2001. The ribbon was cut by Ruaridh MacLeod former Stillman, Iain
Allen and Peter Logie, former Managers and Jim Mitchell, who had been Excise
Officer on Islay since the 1950s. More than a thousand visitors came through the
gates on the day and were taken round in small groups by the Proprietors, Mark
Reynier, Jim McEwan, Gordon Wright and Simon Coughlin together with Distillery
Manager, Duncan McGillivray.
Visitors were able to fill their own Bruichladdich
Valinch with a specially selected 30 year old to mark the occasion. Over 500 of
these
commemorative 50cl bottles were filled from the cask using a Valinch (pipette),
signed by Jim McEwan, labelled by hand with a unique 'I was there' label and
sealed with wax.
Chairman Keith Halsey had arranged a flypast by an Italian Avanti jet, which
flew up specially for the day from Bologna. Video Clip - Download
The celebrations were completed with a ceilidh and a firework display visible
from all around Loch Indaal. As one very old Ileach (native of Islay) was heard
to say:
