A links course is considered to be the
most natural form of golf course. Situated by the sea, links courses use the
natural topography of undulating, sandy terrain which 'links' the beach to the
inner, firmer land as opposed to manicured inland courses which are
artificially constructed on clay or chalky soil.
The sport has it's origins at St. Andrews on the Eastern coast of Scotland, a
links course by the sea, thus spawning other golf courses in seaside locations
in keeping with St. Andrews. A links golf course is considered to be the most
challenging form of the game, for the weather and terrain together influence
play more than on inland courses. Within golf circles it is considered that a
professional golfer is only considered one of the greatest if he wins the
British Open - which is only played on links courses, in keeping with the
origins of the game.
There has always been a social link between whisky and golf: Bruichladdich is
the most natural single malt available, still made by traditional methods in
keeping with links golf courses which are the most natural and traditional form
of golf course.
Bruichladdich selected 'St. Andrews'
by Graeme Baxter for the first release as St. Andrews is acknowledged throughout
the world as the 'Holy Grail' of golf.
