Tasting Reviews - Legacy 1966 Bruichladdich 1966 "Legacy Series One" 36 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky/lslay 40.6% Ab Vi $485.00 Importer: Winebow, lnc., New York, NY Only 1,500 bottles worldwide; 100% American oak hogshead; deep amber hue that borders on being bronze - as expected, perfect clarity and purity; the initial whiffs after the pour on this old malt pick up garden-like, almost woodsy and hay field scents that blow off in about three minutes - following a bit of swirling and seven more minutes, the bouquet starts displaying its fruity / cereal-like base aroma on top of which dance more ethereal scents including pa~, minerals and sweet oak; the palate entry is off-dry and resiny - the midpalate point is the highlight as toasty, semisweet tastes of raisins, cocoa and oak impress the taste buds; the finish is surprisingly hot, but clean and honeyed; excellent, multilayered and more robust than I expected considering the moderate alcohol level. Spirit Journal Rating: ****/Highly Recommended
Whisky Magazine's David Broom and Michael Jackson review the first Bruichladdich Legacy and first two Vintage releases - 1984 and 1970. These were very small bottlings - 4200 bottles for the Vintages and 1500 for the Legacy - and so not surprisingly we have none left, though a few bottles can be found in certain specialist merchants.
Nose This needs time to open but then out comes a perfumed nose of citrus blossom/oil, chocolate, baked fruit, apricots in syrup, the honeycomb centre of a Crunchie bar. It mellows and deepens in time, showing elegant, mature oaky notes, a hint of smoke. Could smell this forever. Palate Seems quite delicate and pretty, but there's masses going on, the oak giving a dry platform for the delicate pretty fruit and nuts to leap off. Still that signature freshness. Conclusion Superb ***** star rating - David Broom - Wine Magazine January 2003 Edition |
