From Glasgow Airport, one takes the Erskine Bridge over the River Clyde, then past what was Littlemill Distillery. The scenic route follows at first the banks of Loch Lomand, then over the pass of "The Rest & Be Thankful" (sometimes blocked by snow in the depths of winter) before following the sea shore of briefly Loch Long, then most of Loch Fyne. At the head of Loch Fyne (1 hour in to the journey) is the Oyster bar of the same name, a good lunchtime stop.
One passes Inveraray Castle, seat of the Duke of Argyll, and the town of Inverary itself, home of Loch Fyne Whiskies. An hour further along the road is Lochgilphead. Ten minutes northwards from here, on the coast overlooking Jura, is the beautifully situated Crinan Hotel - the place to stay overnight - with a first class restaurant and wine list, specialising in seafood and beef.
South of Lochgilphead, the road runs through the picturesque port of Tarbert and then over on to the Atlantic side of the Kintyre Peninsula, before arriving 30 minutes later at the ferry terminal of Kennacraig.
