Octomore II – The Beast Sequels are rarely better than the original. But this just might be the exception. Octomore is the name of a truly exceptional single malt - the world’s most heavily peated whisky - distilled at Bruichladdich. Octomore has been distilled each year since 2002 and is now firmly part of our annual production cycle. For more background details see Octomore I click here: Controlling the malting process at this end of the scale is a very imprecise procedure - the period of kilning being extended five fold. In 2002 the barley measured by HPLC achieved 80.5 parts per million of phenols. For Octomore II 2004 we were again surprised to discover that the comparable analysis measured by HPLC read a whopping 167 ppm. This distillation started on Wednesday 3rd November 2004 The tall, narrow-necked Bruichladdich stills have once again produced the most exceptional Islay hybrid – an extraordinarily heavily peated Islay nose together with a surprisingly refined spirit. And no medicinal flavours. Octomore II will mature in Warehouse Five until Jim believes it is ready to be bottled, which we anticipate being in no less than eight years time. 150 casks were laid down. These are not for sale as new fillings despite unparalleled interest from private individuals and other distillers. To avoid disappointing too many of our friends, we have decided to offer some of this stock for sale now as for fine wine by “en Primeur” or ‘futures’. The first 700 cases, from the first day’s distillation 3/11/04, are reserved for sale as ‘futures’ at £300 a case. These will have a special label with a back label personally signed by Jim McEwan to commemorate Octomore II – The Beast.
