involved, Joseph Reynier in the wine trade since 1919, and Jock McDavid in the
whisky trade.
His parents met on the first fairway of the Isle of Arran’s Blackwaterfoot Golf
Club during the WWII while his father attached to The Royal Highland Fusiliers
(winning an MC) was training in the Commandos, his mother had been evacuated
from Edinburgh.
Mark's started with J.B.Reynier bottling wine. After two years learning about
brewing, blending whiskies and retailing wine with Dorset brewers Eldridge Pope,
in 1986 Mark created wine & spirit merchant La Reserve with school friend Simon
Coughlin in London.
Fate led Mark to Bruichladdich. It started by winning a £1000 bottle of single
malt at a lucky draw at the 1985 London Wine Fair. Collecting the prize from
Jack Milroy Mark was persuaded to try various cask samples, one which caught his
attention was Bruichladdich.
The first visit to Bruichladdich was in 1989, and despite being a customer, was
refused entry. “No Visitors – Plant Closed”. The seed was sown, and a long
campaign started to acquire the distillery.
Independent whisky bottler Murray McDavid, named after the Scottish half of his
family, was formed in 1996 with Gordon Wright, offering natural whiskies,
carefully selected, from various distillers past and present.
On 19th December 2000 Bruichladdich distillery was finally purchased - 30
minutes later his son was born. His family moved to Islay in 2004.
