The and are packaged similarly, in the same Laddie Aqua tins: Why the similarity?
There is a deliberate reason for this: we consider these two Bruichladdich bottlings to be two sides of the same coin.
The is a vintage bottling from 2001 making it 10 years old. Thus, fundamentally, the characteristics of this whisky are influenced primarily by the barley that was used for that year's distillation.
The is not a single vintage, being created from several ages. Here, Jim has selected different casks from various years, with their own individual characteristics, which together create the style of whisky that we are looking for in that bottling; we call it Bruichladdich Classic. It happens to be one of my favourite bottlings.
Think of it like Champagne: there are vintage and non-vintage wines; the former reflects the year's growing season, the latter the skill of the cellar master in creating a bottling that reflects the desired house style.
They make for a very interesting comparison.
