Octomore/2_140

The world's peatiest whisky just got peatier.

We have dialled up the peating level of  the second bottling of Octomore, 'the iron fist in a velvet glove', which has increased to 140ppm, the strength of total phenols in the malted barley prior to distillation, expressed in part per million.

A year older, the American oak bourbon cask matured spirit is beguilingly refined and well integrated: clearly, massively peat + Bruichladdich elegance = awesome spirit.

After nearly 6 years of aging, the whisky has been bottled at 62.5% alc./vol. As with all our spirits, it was originally cask-filled at at distillation strength (undiluted) in this case 70%, the extra high strength giving greater interaction on the flavour compounds via the cask, its oak and maturing environment - hence the unusually higher bottling strength.

Octomore is not for the faint-hearted. At this high level the whisky is for savouring. A mere 15,000 numbered bottles have been released for peatophiles, peat-freaks, and fanatical peat enthusiasts the world over to sip, taste, appreciate and participate in its evolution.

Scientific analysis by HPLC of the whisky at bottling shows a peating level of 77.5ppm - at least 5 times more peaty than any other standard Islay whisky. This astonishing figure, having been reduced by distillation and over time, corresponds to an initial peating level in the malted barley, the usual peating comparison, of at least 140ppm.

As the laboratory analyst said: "this is the highest peating level we have seen - by miles."

Another slice of Octomore anyone?
