 The New
Distillate
There are eight
main categories of New Spirit distilled at Bruichladdich:
Bruichladdich
Traditional Bruichladdich - the mainstay of our distilling program – uses Optic
Scottish barley with a phenolic content of around 5 ppm. Producing an elegant,
floral spirit of great complexity. A whole cask may be purchased
here.
Port Charlotte
Distilled since 2001 and named after the ex distillery of the same name. This is
heavily peated in the original 1881 style of Bruichladdich using Scottish Optic
barley peated at 40 ppm. It unites the elegant spirit with peat aromas – without
the medicinal character associated with some other Islay's.
OCTOMORE of
OCTOMORE’ FUTURES - The World’s Most Heavily Peated Whisky
For the first time in 169 years, Octomore whisky is once again made from
Octomore barley.
To celebrate, 400 cases of 2008 futures (Distilled Early 2009) are available from this historic
distillation. Buy online

Octomore
Distilled since 2002. Octomore is a farm on the hills above Port Charlotte. It
was the site of a now long gone distillery. Distilled from Scottish Optic barley
peated to a minimum of a thumping 80ppm. This is the world’s most heavily
peated whisky. Phenolmenal!
Organic
Since 2003, an increasing proportion of our barley is organically grown in
Scotland. A variety of different farms are used. The barley is harvested,
malted, fermented and distilled separately to obtain highly individual spirits.
Each has a specific characteristic derived from the growing environment, soil
and micro climate – or “terroir”.
Islay-Grown
In December 2004, Chalice barley was distilled from barely grown on Kentraw
farm, 1 mile from the distillery. It was grown on south-east facing slopes,
above Lochindaal on soils consisting of marine deposits that had not been
cultivated for at least a decade. We believe that this is the first Islay grown
whisky to be distilled in recent times. In 2005 ‘Bere’ the original
Viking-introduced barley was grown for the first time.
Triple Distilled
In July 2005 the first ever Islay triple-distilled whisky “Trestarig” was
made at 84%. Over 300 years ago it was noted by traveller and author Martin
Martin that a triple-distilled whisky called Trestarig was drunk in the days
before central heating as a cure against the cold and damp of the Western Isles.
Quadruple
Distilled
In March 2006 the
first ever Quadruple distilled single malt was made at 90% alcohol.X4 - PERILOUS
WHISKY - A legendary quadruple distillation - usquebaugh-baul is the highest strength single malt spirit ever. From the oldest tasting
note by Martin Martin in 1695: "…the first taste affects all the members of the
body: two spoonfuls of this last liquor is a sufficient dose; and if any man
should exceed this, it would presently stop his breath, and endanger his life.”.
In addition, several other experimental peating levels and malting variations
are distilled.
