The Ciara Caskie Allan Appeal

Ciara Caskie Allan is a very brave eleven year old girl who has just returned home to Bowmore on Islay after facing major brain surgery at the Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow for the third time. Ciara suffered a stroke at the age of three due to a brain haemorrhage and her life has been a long battle ever since.  Tests had revealed that Ciara had a benign brain tumour growing around her main arterial, leaving her paralysed on her left side.  She was hospitalised for sixteen weeks at this stage, undergoing intensive hydrotherapy and physiotherapy until she could walk and talk again.

Last year, despite the efforts of her surgeons, it was confirmed that the tumour had spread and some cysts had developed, with her family travelling weekly to Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow.  Unfortunately, half way through the treatment a scan was to show that the tumour had not gone away and that the chemotherapy had been unsuccessful.  A different form of chemo was tried in August of this year, but this too has been unsuccessful.

Ciara has therefore had to endure major brain surgery for the third  time - emerging from a six hour operation on 31st October with a smile as beautiful as ever.  Happily, she is now back home on Islay with her family and recuperating before the flight out to the USA at the end of this month.

Ciara and her family must now fly to Oklahoma in the USA for intensive proton therapy to support the work done during the surgery at Yorkhill. She will receive this proton therapy treatment for five days a week for 14 weeks.  It will not be easy, but it has to be done.

Everyone on Islay is working hard to support Ciara and her family at this difficult time with lots of fundraising events. The Ilich have organised dances and discos, quizzes and talks.  Islay farmers have raised over £2,000 by donating lambs with the support of United Auctions and Caledonian Marts.  Bowmore Football Club are involved, as are Islay Rugby Club and the WRI in Portnahaven.  Ciara's classmates at Bowmore Primary School are running a Cross Country Challenge.   There is an awful lot going on.

At Bruichladdich, Jim McEwan is inviting us all to a very special whisky tasting/ Masterclass to raise funds, and there are going to be some very exciting auctions which we hope will be great fun as well as raising funds to help this brave, brave young lady.

We will be updating Facebook and Twitter regularly with information about events on the island, our auctions and ways you can help.
